How Gutters Affect Your Roof's Lifespan
Gutters seem like a detail at the edge of the roof, but they are actually one of the most important parts of the whole system. A gutter that doesn't work properly can end a roof's life years early and cause damage far beyond the eaves.
What Gutters Actually Do
Gutters collect the volume of water that runs off a roof, which is surprisingly large. A 1500 square foot roof sheds roughly 900 gallons of water during a 1-inch rainfall. Gutters channel that water to downspouts and away from the foundation. Remove them from the equation and the water ends up against fascia, siding, and ultimately the foundation.
Overflow at the Eave
A clogged or undersized gutter overflows at the eave, directly behind the gutter lip. That water lands on the fascia board and the bottom edge of the decking, both of which are not designed to stay wet for long. Repeated overflow rots fascia in a few years and decking in a few more.
Ice Dam Amplification
A gutter packed with leaves freezes solid in winter. That ice acts as a dam, forcing meltwater backward under the first courses of shingles. Even a properly installed roof can leak from a badly maintained gutter in a freeze-thaw cycle.
Pulling Away From the Fascia
Gutters clogged with debris can hold hundreds of pounds of water and wet leaves. Old spike-and-ferrule hangers eventually pull out of the fascia under that weight. Once the gutter sags, the pitch is lost, water pools, and the rotting feedback loop accelerates.
What Good Gutters Look Like
A healthy gutter system is clean, pitched toward the downspouts at about a quarter inch per 10 feet, supported with hidden hangers every 2 feet, and has downspouts that actually carry water away from the foundation at least 4 feet. Drip edge is installed so water from the roof lands inside the gutter, not behind it.
Simple Maintenance
Two cleanings a year is enough for most homes, one in late fall after the leaves are down and one in early spring. Homes under heavy tree cover may need more. If your downspouts overflow in any storm, the gutters are telling you something and they should be checked.
