Preparing Your Roof for Winter

2 min read

Winter in NJ is the hardest season on a roof. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow, ice dams, and wind all stress the system at once. The roofs that come through winter unscathed are almost always the ones that got a little attention in the fall.

Clean Out the Gutters

By far the most important winter prep step. A gutter full of leaves freezes solid and becomes an ice dam starter kit. Meltwater has nowhere to go and backs up under the first courses of shingles.

Clean gutters after the leaves are down but before the first freeze. Run a hose down the downspouts to confirm flow.

Trim Back Overhanging Branches

Any branches that hang over the roof are winter liabilities. Heavy snow loads break branches onto the roof. Even branches that don't break scrape against shingles in wind and accelerate wear.

Inspect and Reseal Flashings

Walk the roof or have it inspected. Look at the caulking at the chimney, skylight, and any wall transitions. Any cracks or gaps will be water paths all winter. Fresh roofing cement or caulk in the fall pays off every storm.

Check Attic Insulation and Ventilation

An attic that's too warm melts snow unevenly on the roof, which is the core mechanism behind ice dams. Look for insulation that's compressed against soffit vents and pull it back. Check that soffit baffles are intact. Confirm that the attic has both intake and exhaust working.

Replace Worn Pipe Boots

If any rubber pipe boots show cracking along the top, replace them before winter. Winter rain and snow find cracked boots immediately and a ceiling stain in January is not how anyone wants to start the year.

Know Where the Shutoffs Are

If you have any history of roof leaks, know the path of the ceiling and wall from your roof down. Clear items from beneath. Keep a tarp and a contractor's number handy just in case.

What To Do After a Heavy Snowfall

After a snowstorm of 8 inches or more, keep an eye on the eaves. If you see a thick ridge of ice forming at the gutter line, get it evaluated. A professional can safely clear an ice dam and identify whether the cause is ventilation, insulation, or something else.
