Ridge Vent Retrofit and Attic Ventilation Correction

Project Overview

Homeowner reported an overheated second floor in summer and visible frost in the attic each winter. Existing roof relied on three small box vents that were undersized for the attic volume.

Analysis

Attic had adequate soffit intake but almost no exhaust. Insulation on the joists showed moisture banding consistent with condensation. Existing box vents were sealed over and the ridge was cut to code for a continuous ridge vent.

Process

Attic baseline readings; removal of box vents and patching; ridge cut to spec; ridge vent installation; ridge shingle cap; end terminations sealed; post-install attic temperature check.

Outcome

Summer attic temperatures measured on average 14 degrees lower after install. Winter frost pattern eliminated. Homeowner noted improved comfort on the second floor.

Project Details

Materials Used

GAF Cobra Ridge Vent, GAF ridge cap shingles (matching existing charcoal), synthetic underlayment patch, roofing sealant, stainless ring-shank nails.

Methods & Techniques

Box vents removed and sheathed over with new decking patches. A continuous slot was cut along the ridge leaving the structural ridge board intact. Cobra ridge vent installed, capped with matching ridge shingles, and sealed at terminations.

Key Highlights

Net free area doubled; box vents eliminated; continuous ridge vent installed; matching charcoal ridge cap; balanced intake/exhaust ventilation.
