Rotted Roof Decking Replacement Under Existing Shingles
Project Overview
A soft spot on the roof was discovered during a routine inspection. Investigation revealed water intrusion from an older vent repair had saturated two sheets of roof sheathing.
Analysis
Shingles and underlayment in the affected area were removed. The CDX plywood underneath was delaminated across approximately thirty-two square feet. Adjacent rafters showed moisture staining but remained structurally sound.
Process
Moisture mapping; controlled shingle removal above rot; sheathing cut-out and replacement; rafter treatment and inspection; ice-and-water patch; underlayment; shingle re-weave; post-install inspection.
Outcome
Structural integrity restored. No visible seam on the finished roof. Homeowner avoided a full roof replacement by catching the issue early.
Project Details
Materials Used
5/8" CDX plywood sheathing, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water shield patch, matching architectural shingles, ring-shank nails, rafter-brushed borate treatment.
Methods & Techniques
Rotted sheets cut out at rafter centers and replaced with dimensional plywood. Seams supported with H-clips where needed. Full ice-and-water patch before shingle re-install to tie into existing field.
Key Highlights
Structural sheathing replacement; rafter-checked and treated; seamless shingle re-weave; avoided full tear-off.
