Hail Damage on Asphalt Shingles: What to Actually Look For

2 min read

What hail damage actually looks like

Hail damage on asphalt shingles shows up as circular bruises. The shingle surface is struck hard enough to fracture the fiberglass mat underneath without tearing through. From a distance, it looks like a dark spot. Up close, it is a soft, slightly indented circle where the granules have been knocked loose.

Run a finger over a bruised spot and the asphalt underneath feels soft compared to surrounding shingles. That softness is the mat fracture, and over time water works into those spots and the damage accelerates.

What hail damage is not

Hail damage is not scuffed corners on shingles. It is not granules in the gutter after a normal rain. It is not streaking or discoloration. Those are normal wear and aging.

Real hail damage is directional (matches the wind direction during the storm), matches across all roof slopes on the exposed side, and shows on softer materials too: dented aluminum gutters, nicks on shingle ridges, and bruises on exposed flashings.

Why it matters for an insurance claim

Carriers use a chalk test: a roofer rubs colored chalk across a 10x10 foot square and counts impact points. If enough impact points per square meet the carrier threshold (usually six to eight), the slope qualifies for replacement.

Slope-level replacement is common. Even if only one slope meets the threshold, carriers typically cover replacement of that slope to maintain the manufacturer warranty.

What to do after a hail storm

Do not climb your own roof. Call a roofing contractor experienced with insurance claims. They can do a free chalk-test inspection and document impact counts with photos.

If there is a legitimate claim, the contractor works with your adjuster directly. If there is no damage, you have peace of mind and no cost. Either way, do not let a storm-chaser door-knocker convince you there is damage without a real inspection.
